Excerpts of Pastor E.A Adeboye’s sermon at the 2018/2019 Crossover Service
Reference Scripture: “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:13-14)
Most of the time when we are doing any form of thanksgiving, we focus the attention on ourselves. For instance, we say, "I am grateful I am healed or I am grateful that I got a new job, etc.” However, in Luke 2:13-14, the angel teaches us that the focus of our thanksgiving should not be us but God. Thank God for being God.
Thank God, the Father; the greatest giver. In Genesis 2:7, we see that God, the Father is the giver of life. He formed the man out of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breathe of life, and man became a living soul. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This shows that God doesn’t’ just give life, He gives everlasting life. He is the giver of wisdom, because James 1:5 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” 1 Timothy 6:17 says God is not miserly; He gives us richly all things to enjoy. Psalm 68:19 says God daily loads us with benefits. The Yorubas call Him ‘Olodumare’. In other words, it means when He wants to bless you, He uses drums to load you with His blessings. David said in Psalm 23:5, “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” All numbers have a meaning. For instance, number seven (7) is the number for perfection, but as I waited on the LORD for this programme; I suddenly discovered there is something greater than perfect when you are dealing with God. When a cup is full to the brim, that is perfectly full; but God will say that is not enough, let us add a little more so that the cup can run over. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
Thank God, the Son for His love. Thank God, the Father and thank God, the Son; because John 15:13 says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” God, the Son is your greatest friend. He is not only your greatest friend, He loves you until the end (see John 13:1). Many of us have had friends that disappointed us. The Bible says the rich man has many friends, while the poor is hated by his neighbours. People will pretend to be your friend when all is well, the moment things dry up for you, they desert you. God cannot desert you. When He loves you, He loves you until the end. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” His friendship is unchanging; He does not love you in the morning and then hate you in the afternoon, He loves you all the time. Be assured of His friendship in 2019. In Hebrews 13:5, God says, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Psalm 121:5 tells you that His friendship is as close as your shadow. Many a time, you do not see your shadow, but it is there. Many a time you do not feel the presence of Jesus Christ but He is there, and the beautiful thing is that He cannot die again and leave you; He is with you 24/7 for the rest of your life.
Thank God, the Son for giving us His Name; because He said in John 14:14, “Ask anything in My Name, and you will get it.” Thus, He is giving you a blank cheque to request anything and you will get it. Bible scholars posit that when He said, “Ask anything in My name”, it means when you ask for something that He forgot to create, He will create it for you. You must thank Him for His Name, because you will need the Name seriously in 2019; because at the Name of Jesus, every knee must bow. In 2019, witches, wizards and every mountain will bow.
You have to thank God, the Son for His Blood that brought salvation to us. The Blood that cleanses us from all our sins and gives us victory over satan. The Bible says we overcame the devil by the Blood of the Lamb.
Thank God, the Son because He is our hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).
Thank God, the Holy Spirit – the Comforter; because what will our life be without the Comforter? John 14:26 says, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Some can run to their pastors for comfort when they are in trouble; when the pastor has problems, He can run to the General Overseer for comfort; but if the General Overseer has sorrows to deal with, to whom does he run? He runs to the Comforter. Thank the Holy Spirit for power, because Acts 1:8 says you shall receive power when the Holy Ghost is come upon you. Power passes power, you may not know it, but I do. If you have been baptised in the Holy Spirit, you have power; you may not feel it, but it is there. In 1975, about forty-three years ago, some witches had an open confrontation with one of my daughters, saying that they would kill her. She ran to me in Lagos and I rebuffed them. I told her not to listen to them, as they were joking. Forty-three years later, my daughter is still alive and those who threatened her are dead. This is power from the Holy Spirit.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU THANK GOD?
- When you thank God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you will get the ability to prophesy. Revelation 19:7-10 reveals that it is through the Holy Spirit you get the ability to prophesy. At least, if you cannot prophesy to anybody, you can prophesy to yourself.
- Psalm 67:5-7 tells us that if you thank God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, He will bless you so much that the world will fear you. This means a fearful blessing will come upon you.
- When you thank God, the Father, according to John 12:32, your promotion will be accelerated.
The angel in Luke 2:13-14 said, “Glory to God in the highest”; thus, in 2019, focus your attention on God and let Him handle the rest that He needs to do for you. The problem is that in the past, we have been focusing too much on ourselves, let us focus more on Him. I appeal to you with everything that is within me; this year, do not miss any of the Holy Ghost Services; because God helping me, by the time 2019 is ending, you will not be asking God to deliver you from demons, you will be saying, ‘God wherever those demons are, let them come out.’ God helping me, by the time 2019 is running out, you will not be praying for healing, you will be saying, ‘God I want You to send me the sick to lay hands on and heal at least a dozen that the doctors have written off.’ You are the light of the world; in 2019, you will shine.
Ultimately, God has no pleasure in the sacrifice of a sinner, He says the sacrifice of a sinner is an abomination to Him. Thus, if you say, ‘Thank you God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit’, He will shut you up; because you have allowed the Blood He shed at Calvary to waste by refusing to wash in His Blood. He is a Holy God that a sinner cannot toy with. Surrender your life to Jesus Christ so that you can be the first fruit of the New Year.
