Power with God and Power with Men – 1

Excerpts of Dr. Okey Onuzo's message at the Sunrise Service on Sunday, February 18, 2018

Bible Text: Genesis 32:24-32 (KJV)

There are people already presuming that prayer came from nothing and as a result of this, they are discouraging people from going deeper into the awesome powers of prayer that can bring down the power of God in our time. Prayers work and testimonies abound in the individual level. In seasons like this, many people don't know that only prayer brings changes. People need to go to God in prayer and ask Him what they can do to bring about change; not by the wisdom of men but by the power of God. From the story of the children of Israel, God took them out from another nation and He did not have to fight any war (Deuteronomy 4). They cried onto the God of Jacob (for He had become a distant memory to them) to deliver them, as they had been turned from guests to slaves in Egypt. When a people lose their spiritual direction, they may still have religion, but they have totally lost their spiritual direction. Exodus Chapter 2 speaks of the ordinary people God can use to make a difference. The story of Moses' birth and transition to the king's palace to be taken care of, and leading the Israelites out of Egypt, is the sort of thing that should inspire you that God can use anyone to bring down His power, make a difference or get God to arise over a situation. The Christian is the hope of the world, and without the Christian, the world will be enveloped in darkness.

Nobody has any doubts to the fact that God answers the prayers of His people and testimonies of it abound. However, you need to face the reality that our nation is in dire need of prayers. From Exodus 2:11, we see that Moses got empowered to bring a difference. The Book of Hebrews also tells us that when Moses was grown, he preferred to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. These are choices that will draw the power of God. When a person decides to be empowered by God (to have decrees count and have answered prayers), such a person should be ready to pay the price. This is the decision every Christian should make, particularly in the face of the fact that there are people passing false messages that prayer does not count. The moment you make this decision to be empowered, know that there will be temptations. Hence, if you always remember that you want to be empowered by God, you will always remember that there is nothing as awesome as a man that Heaven listens to. Such person may not be rich or connected; nobody may know his name on earth, but in Heaven, they know him. When you know that Heaven knows you, this makes you content. The light of the Gospel of Christ is the only hope of mankind. Morality is not a system of salvation for mankind, not because morality cannot change man, but because it does not have the power to. Your resolve to live godly does not help you to live godly except the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon you. You have to connect with the power of God so that when challenges, fear, uncertainty or threats surface, you know that you have someone on the inside of you who gives you courage. Courage is not the absence of fear, it is in spite of fear. When you thirst for the power of God, particularly in an emergency situation, then you must look to people like Moses who decided to take the risk and do whatever the Holy Spirit urged him to do. The foundation of spiritual power is righteousness (Psalm 62:11). Power is exclusive to God (Matthew 6:13). In addition, the foundation of God's power is absolute purity. God is absolutely pure (1 John 1:5), and because God is absolutely pure, no creature can match His power, because they cannot match His purity.

Finally, ll you need for empowerment is to do what Apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy 2:19, "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The LORD knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." You need to go to God in prayer and say you will depart from iniquity so that the Kingdom of God will prosper through you. You need to be determined to glorify God in your life. God can only empower you if you have a relationship with Him. If you are willing to repent and surrender your life to Jesus Christ, then pray this prayer right now: Oh LORD, please forgive me all my sins; wash me with the Blood of Jesus. I believe with all my heart that Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead to give me a new life. LORD Jesus, sit on the throne of my life and rule over me, be my LORD, be my Saviour. May Your Holy Spirit dwell in me so that I may be and do everything in Your heart concerning me before I come to Heaven. Thank You O God for this day; for a salvation so full and free, in Jesus name I pray.
