Only with Your Eyes

[A Message by Pastor Idowu Iluyomade at Digging for Gold Service on Tuesday, January 30, 2018]

Reference Scriptures:

JOHN 3:1 – “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.”

PSALM 91:8 - “ONLY with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”

Studying Psalm 91:8, we can infer that even though there are other things that could have happened to you, it says “ONLY with your eyes will you see and behold the reward of the wicked.” This means calamities could be happening all around you; you could be near that situation; you may be in the vicinity of calamity; but only with your eyes will you see, you will not be a partaker in Jesus Name. In school, there were difficult courses and sometimes difficult lecturers, yet some people passed while others failed. For example, while others were giving bribe to pass exams, some did not and in the long run those that compromised their standards could fail while you pass due to your receiving divine assistance.

Why did God say: “ONLY with your eyes….”

Gratitude & Appreciation to God

One of the reasons God made this statement is to extract gratitude from you. Most of the things that happen to us, we take for granted. We freely breathe in and out; if He was to charge you for that breathe of fresh air, you will appreciate Him more. You open your eyes and can see, you can walk, you can eat and digest, you sleep and wake-up, you take everything for granted and you don’t even say ‘Thank You Jesus!’ it is when you get to the hospital that you will really appreciate the grace of God.

When all the firstborns of the Egyptian children, goats, cattle died and nothing happened to the firstborns of the children of Israel living in the same country. What God wanted to extract from them is gratitude when they see how He distinguishes between those that serve Him and those who don’t (Malachi 3:18).

Sometimes, it is so easy for us to forget all the things God has done for us, indeed sometimes we do not even testify. Below are few testimonies never shared:

“In my final year at secondary school everybody was able to pay for their WAEC fees and my parents couldn’t afford mine. They gave me a deadline to pay within five (5) days and I ran to my uncle’s house who has been avoiding to see me; luckily I met him on his way out of his house, and he reneged on his promise to give me the full fees; but on getting to my school to register a man I knew from nowhere paid my fees, and I passed.”

“My mother gave birth to me crippled, for the first six years of my life I couldn’t walk or control my bladder. My father is a pastor and mum tried everything she could to make me better. People advised her to abandon me because I will eventually die, but she told them I will live. One afternoon my mum was washing outside and all of a sudden, I stood up at seven years old. I didn’t take this miracle seriously until when I saw a crippled man trying to cross the road and at the same time he was begging for alms. Then I remembered my mother’s words that I should forever be grateful because I was once crippled.”

Lesson: Repent for not sharing past testimonies and start sharing all your testimonies so that God’s Name can be glorified.

The children of Israel forgot how God delivered them from the hands of their enemies, the Egyptians, and they moulded a golden calf worshiping it and saying it was the calf that delivered them from the iron clave of Egypt (Exodus 32:4). This happens to a lot of people; before God answers your prayers, you pray fast, but once the answer comes, and things are going well for you, God says ‘pay me a tithe of just 10%, you begin to struggle.’ He has prospered you for a region, please cooperate with Him (Deuteronomy 6:10-12).  It is always good to be thankful (see Psalm 103).

Gratitude & Appreciation to Others

Also, we often forget to say thank you to others who have done good to us, we tend to easily forget and just move on with life. In 1 Samuel 25:10-11, David and his men protected Nabal’s animals in the woods, and none of his animals got missing. Then, they heard that he was shearing his sheep, David sent a word to him to please give him anything so that they could have something to eat. Nabal sent the servants back to David asking “who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.” Nabal disdained him, and he became very angry. David moved against him and was almost going to kill him, but for the timely intervention of Abigail, Nabal’s wife.  Thus, it is possible for us to overlook some of the past graces from God, and help from others.

In Genesis 40:23, the Butler forgot Joseph for two years after God used Joseph to give the Butler an advantage in life. Pray that the Holy Spirit will help you to remember people you never said thank you too, and make sure you call them immediately and say thank you. I pray that the Spirit of God will bring all these people into our remembrance so that nothing will stand against us on the day of reckoning. Jesus was disappointed when out of 10 lepers healed, only one came back to say thank you (Luke 17:11-19). There might also be people in your life feeling let down by your not remembering to say thank you. God can feel bad and say “we healed 10 lepers, how come only one who is even a commoner is the one that came back to say thank you!” If you could feel that how much more, you and I when we do a good turn and it is forgotten.

Finally, these are the last days, and the enemy is roaming around looking for who to devour. Satan has placed marks on those that he has programmed to destroy, kill, and plunder, but if you surrender your life to Jesus Christ, He will wipe away the mark on of the beast, He will protect you, He will reward and give you a new lease of life. If you are willing to repent of your sins, surrender your life to Jesus Christ and know your eternal purpose, then pray this prayer right now: LORD Jesus, I come to You right now. I know I am a sinner, please forgive me my sins. With my mouth, I confess that Jesus, I accept You as the LORD of my life. Change my heart from a heart of stone, give me a heart of flesh. Help me to obey You; fill me with Your Holy Spirit and write my name in the Book of life. Reveal Your eternal purpose unto me, and help me realign my pursuits in line with Your divine plans for me in Jesus Mighty Name I pray.
