Help From Above

Excerpts of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade's Sermon at the July 2017 Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, July 2, 2017

In this year of our Pleasant Surprises, God’s word for us at the City of David is The Pursuit of God. Every month, God blesses us with specific words and He has always been faithful to ensure that His words never return to Him empty, but must accomplish the purpose for which He sent them. As individuals and as a church, we can testify to His goodness and fidelity to His word and we praise Him for the first half of the year, and also thanking Him in advance for the second half.

In January, He said Blessings shall overtake us.

February - Multiple Break-through

March -  Divine Prosperity

April - Living God

May - Lord’s Mercy

June - Positive change

I am particularly excited about the month of July because it is the beginning of the second half of the year 2017, and the Bible says better is the end of a thing than the beginning (Ecclesiastes 7:8). The Bible also says in Job 7:8 that even though your beginning was small, uneventful and below expectation, yet your later end, that is July to December shall greatly increase and be full of testimonies. I believe that it is on account of this that the Lord has sent us His word for the month of July, that we will receive divine Help From Above – help to achieve our dreams and God’s purposes for our lives. Hallelujah!!!

Defining our terms

Help means: assistance, supply of what is necessary to accomplish a task, to contribute strength, to satisfy a need, to make life or a situation easier

Above means: At a higher level, Higher or in superior rank, authority or power.

In our context, “above” is referring to God. In John 8:23 Jesus says “I am from above”. In this month, God is saying He is sending us help from above. James 1:17 says every good and perfect gift comes from above. In the wordings of Psalm 121:1-2 we need to lift up our eyes to God from where our help will come this month.

When Do We Need Help?

We need help in situations such as when our enemies are too strong for us. In 2nd Chronicles 14:11, King Asa faced an opposition greater than Him and he cried out to God for help, and God helped him. In Psalm18:17-18 David said “He delivered me from my strong enemies, for they were too strong for me.”

In one way or the other, we all require help. Sometimes, some people think they do not need help; hence help cannot come if they do not ask for it. That was why in John 5:6, Jesus asked the man who had been sick for 38 years if he wanted to be made whole. Also, in Mark 6:48-49, there was a storm and the disciples were right in the eye of the storm. Jesus came walking on water but acted like He did not see them and was passing them. They could have kept quiet or try to help themselves but when they saw Jesus walking away, they cried out for help and He helped them.

In Exodus 2:24-25, the children of Israel also cried out to God for help to save them from slavery. Therefore, let us not hesitate to cry out to God for help in every situation, and He will surely help us because God always responds to the cries of the helpless.

Can Man Help?

There are people that God has positioned in our lives to help us, we call them Destiny Helpers. God says in Galatians 6:10 that we should lend a helping hand to all men, especially those who are of the household of faith. In 2nd Kings 4:8, the Shunamite woman was arranged by God to help Prophet Elisha, not knowing she was also helping herself. This teaches us to help others (Hebrews 13:2). God can also command people to assist us even against their will as we see in 1st Kings 17:9-12 where God commanded a widow to sustain Prophet Elijah in the time of famine. My prayer is that you will connect with everyone that God has commanded to help you this month.

Help of Man Can Fail

In Genesis 40:14, whilst in prison Joseph helped the King’s butler to interpret a dream and in return told him to remember him when he was released, to speak well of him to Pharaoh that he had been unjustly incarcerated. However, the butler totally forgot about Joseph for two years until God orchestrated a situation that made the butler remember Joseph. We now understand why the Psalmist cried to God; “Give us help from trouble, for vain is the help of man.” But we thank God that though man can forget, God will never forget you (Isaiah 36:6).

There Are Situations Where Only God Can Help

·             When Daniel was thrown into the Lions’ Den (Daniel 6:22)

·             When the three Hebrew children were thrown into a fiery furnace (Daniel 3:24-25)

·             When the Israelites were faced with Red Sea at the front and the Egyptian army behind (Exodus 14:21)

·             When nature – the stars, great stones and the river had to fight against the enemies of Israel (Judges 5:20, Joshua 10:11)

·             When the Israelites were faced with the impenetrable walls of Jericho Joshua 5:13-14

In this month, our testimony shall be: If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 124).

In conclusion, it is imperative to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to guarantee help from above. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your personal LORD and Saviour, you need to make yourself known to Him, because He wants to help you. Are you struggling? Are you burdened? There is no help you require that God cannot grant unto you. Indeed, God wants to help you to fulfil your destiny. However, salvation precedes any other thing. If you want help to come your way, and you are willing to repent and surrender your life to Jesus Christ, then pray this prayer right now: LORD Jesus, I come to you right now. I know I am a sinner, please forgive me my sins. With my mouth, I confess that Jesus, I accept You as the Saviour of my soul. I believe with my heart that it is because of me You came into this world; You died for my sins, You took away my sins; please write my name in the Book of Life. I need Your help, please help me. I need intervention, please intervene in my situation, and I will testify in Jesus Mighty Name.
